DTMB bids for Ecuador's National Digital TV Standard

According to Potevio News, the Chinese Digital TV standard, which was released two years ago, is bidding to become the Ecuadorian National Digital TV standard, with bidding now is at the last stage.  If China wins the bid, it will mark China¡¯s innovative Digital TV standard for the first time ever extending into the overseas market, causing a domino effect in Latin American countries.
¡°China¡¯s digital TV standard, led by Potevio, is competing to become the Ecuadorian national digital TV standard. The test was finished on July 14th, and the result will probably come out by the end of this month,¡± said Mr. Sun Liang, the General Manager of Broadcasting at Potevio. He indicated that China¡¯s digital TV standard, the DTMB released by the Chinese Standardization Administration in 2006, was a China-owned industry standard with independent intellectual property rights, which integrates Tsinghua University¡¯s multi-carrier technology and SJTU¡¯s single-carrier technology.
Currently, there are four main digital TV standards in the world, they are: Europe¡¯s DVB-T, America¡¯s ATSC, Japan¡¯s ISDB-T, and China¡¯s DTMB. Besides DTMB, which is only used in Mainland China and Hong Kong, the other three are all international standards. Therefore, as TD-SCDMA, promoting the China¡¯s standard to the overseas market will mark the successful extension of China¡¯s standards, with independent intellectual property rights, into the international market.
¡°The bidding, this time, is a good opportunity to drive forward Chinese standard-DTMB to the international market,¡± Mr.Su Liang stated. ¡°There are about 12 Latin American countries which haven¡¯t determined their digital TV standards. The Latin American countries advocate using a standard. So, if we can succeed in one country, the other countries will be affected, like a domino effect, and that will help further promote China¡¯s digital TV standard in the Latin American market. ¡°
The Chinese government is reportedly paying high attention to the bidding. Potevio has been approved by China¡¯s Ministry of Commerce as a national ¡°Key Export Supporting Industry¡± in Latin America.  Potevio is committed to advancing the internationalization of China¡¯s digital TV standards.
According to Mr. Sun¡¯s introduction, in early 2008, Potevio learned of competitive bidding for the digital TV standards in the Latin American countries and the Caribbean, especially in Colombia, Cuba, Peru, Venezuela and Ecuador, then started promoting DTMB in the areas.  By cooperating with relevant science and technology institutes, Potevio launched a series of products which met local requirements, which included: network layout and design, integration of network equipment, transmitters, re-transmitters, household fixed set-top-boxes, vehicle mobile set-top-boxes, terminals, and mobile phone terminals. In addition, Potevio submitted proposals to the Standardization Administration of China for revising the relevant standards and adding the options for 6M in accordance with the local 6M system requirement.
In October 2008, China¡¯s delegation (comprised of China Digital Television Alliance (CDTA) and Potevio) learned of the competitive bidding for Ecuadorian digital TV standards and the coming Ecuadorian digital television standard forum during their visit to the Latin American area.
In December, Potevio and Tsinghua University sent delegates to the forum and expressed their intention of competing in the bidding for Ecuadorian digital TV standards.
In April of 2009, Supertel, the Ecuadorian communication industry¡¯s regulatory authority, invited CDTA to participate in the competitive bidding for its digital television standard; Potevio, entrusted by CCTA, took part in the prophase work for the bidding and the standard revision in Ecuador.
In June, the test group composed by the technicians and experts from CDTA, Potevio, Tsinghua University, and Beijing BBEF S&T Co., Ltd. went to Ecuador to text the Chinese digital TV standard.
¡°The text result currently shows that the Chinese standard is superior to the other standards. However, the final outcome of the bidding remains unpredictable.  Supertel will soon submit the competition projects to the government, and the final result will possibly come out at the end of this month,¡± Mr. Sun explained.
¡°The extension of Chinese digital TV standards in Latin American countries marks the first time that Chinese technological standards have entered the international market, and its success will bring about a huge commercial benefit for Chinese enterprises,¡± he said.
¡°The promotion of Chinese digital TV standard in overseas markets is very significant.  Whether we succeed or not in the bidding, the attempt is very important,¡± added Mr. Haodong, the Vice-President of Potevio¡¯s Radio and TV Business Application Division.
