Mr. S.V. Vasudevan (Vasu) is Director of Cable Video Architectures at Cisco Systems, responsible for video networking solutions for cable and backbone service provider networks.
An electrical engineering graduate of UC Berkeley, Vasu began his career at 3Com designing networking adapters. At that time, 10BASE-T, the first commercial implementation of twisted-pair Ethernet, was just emerging from IEEE standardization, and would later help catalyze the rapid global proliferation of IP communications. Vasu also worked at portable networking pioneer Xircom, developing a prototype and first generation wireless adapter that years later would later become standardized and now known as 802.11 or Wi-Fi.
Vasu joined video compression startup DiviCom (acquired by Harmonic, Inc.) during its first year of operation to work on a then-emerging digital television technology called MPEG-2. He co-designed one of the first broadcast MPEG-2 encoders and remultiplexers, and developed the first commercial product to carry MPEG-2 transport over ATM networks. He also led the design of the first encoder in a highly-integrated 1RU form factor. Vasu later joined DiviCom's highly-renowned Professional Services group as a systems architect, working with R&D and 3rd party subsystem vendors on open solutions for worldwide digital television deployments.
As Chief Architect for BigBand Networks, Vasu leveraged his experiences in both networking and digital video. His responsibilities were to apply BigBand's CMTS platforms to develop solutions that served today's needs and tomorrow's possibilities. A key instrumental solution to emerge from these efforts was Switched Digital Broadcast, which after 3+ years of inspiration and perspiration, is currently being rolled out by major North American MSOs.
At Cisco, Vasu¡¯s mission is to leverage the networking technologies provided by Cisco and the video technologies from Cisco¡¯s recent acquisition of Scientific Atlanta to create a powerful suite of solutions that will provide unprecedented levels of service flexibility, scalability and personalization. He has authored several published technical papers and has been an invited speaker at many industry conferences.

Abstract of the speech :
As we enter and create the communications world of the 21st century, service providers are no longer defined by their transmission technologies. Cable carriers are becoming voice providers. Telecom carriers are becoming video providers. Mobile carriers are adding video elements to their services. The carriers are seeking to provide a bundled service of voice, video, data, and mobility to consumers. Some are achieving this goal through strategic partnerships. Others are designing their network infrastructure to support these services on a common platform.

Building a platform to satisfy 21st century carrier needs is a challenge. The carriers that will ultimately succeed will be the ones who manage a technology platform that is both scalable and flexible in the services that can be accommodated today as well as the services that are anticipated in the future. This talk will specifically address the opportunity for cable operators to transform their business into an "experience" provider by integrating the latest advances in digital video, IPTV and DOCSIS technologies to build a converged platform for offering quad-play services."
